Roukia

The Mayoress of Chirongui is a convinced ecologist who practices what she preaches. Three years ago she established a plant to treat waste water by mangrove filtration. It is probably a world-first for a strong tidal lagoon. The technology works well, the mangrove is flourishing and the red crabs have returned.

Volcan

This lagoon policeman has been nick-named Volcan due to the limitless energy he brings to his work. As launch captain he crosses traditional fishermen as well as suspect divers; sometimes to advise or sometimes to reprimand. He expresses his outrage at the assaults perpetrated on the crystal waters of the lagoon.

Karani

The young, capable Karani crisscrosses the island to consult the inhabitants about the new Marine Reserve. The published results of a year-long enquiry have shown that djarifa fishing is compatible with the lagoon’s eco-balance. This is good news for Aline and Zalihata who explain how this traditional way of fishing is essential for the health of the villagers.

Hampus

This single-minded Swedish scientist devotes his research to the lowly sea cucumber.  It is a strange and fascinating creature that has a vital function in the lagoon ecosystem. On a diving outing with Yannick, Hampus shows us the sea cucumber in its natural habitat.

Sidi

As leader of an environmental group, Matulay Explorer, Sidi has been planting new mangroves to save the lagoon from silting up. Mangrove trees produce a seedling that simply falls into the mud and sprouts into a new tree. Sidi stands by to give nature a helping hand.

Toibib

Founder of an association, Clean Village, Toibib leads a lively host of teenagers to clean up the beach: soft drink cans, plastic bags and all kinds of consumer rubbish. Among these ‘young carers’ we find eleven year old Ascandari proclaiming solemnly his conviction: we must leave a clean island for the next generation.

Debaa, performed by Soimadiya

A traditional art form for the women of Mayotte. The chant that you will hear was composed and choreographed uniquely for our film. It celebrates the beauty of the lagoon and urges everyone to do their best to preserve it. Our beautiful performers have dressed up especially to support our efforts in favour of the lagoon.
